Evolving Chess Playing Programs

This contribution introduces a hybrid GP/ES system for the evolution of chess playing computer programs. We discuss the basic system and examine its performance in comparison to pre-existing algorithms of the type alphabeta and its improved variants. We can show that evolution is able to outperform these algorithms both in terms of eÆciency and strength.

Gambit: A Robust Chess-Playing Robotic System

This paper presents Gambit, a custom, mid-cost 6DoF robot manipulator system that can play physical board games against human opponents in non-idealized environments. Historically, unconstrained robotic manipulation in board games has often proven to be more challenging than the underlying game reasoning, making it an ideal testbed for small-scale manipulation. The Gambit system includes a low-...

Playing "Invisible Chess" with Information-Theoretic Advisors

Making decisions under uncertainty remains one of the central problems in AI research. Unfortunately, most uncertain real-world problems are so complex that any progress in them is extremely dif cult. Games model some elements of the real world, and offer a more controlled environment for exploring methods for dealing with uncertainty. Chess and chess-like games have long been used as a strateg...

Mining Chess Playing as a Complex Process

The main objective of this paper is checking whether, and to what extent, advanced process mining techniques can support efficient and effective knowledge discovery in complex domains. For this purpose, we focused on chess playing, and cast it as a process. A secondary objective is checking whether the discovered information can provide interesting insight in the game rules and strategies, and/...
